Tiling Apprentice

A floor and wall tiler paves areas, with either interior or exterior tiles.

A floor and wall tiler:

  • draws or receives a basic design of the area to be tiled
  • measures area to be tiled
  • digs out the area to be tiled
  • levels and prepares the surface for tiling
  • cuts tiles to the correct shape and size
  • cements edges of the tiled area
  • lays tiles

It is preferable that the applicant has three years secondary education with preference given to those who have NCEA Level 1 in English, maths, science, graphics and technology.  Alternately they may have the Level 1 National Certificate in Employment Skills.

 

The successful applicant should be able to communicate well with their employers and clients. They also need to be accurate and precise in their tiling techniques. Floor and wall tilers must have a good level of fitness and health, strong arms and a strong back as they are often stooping, bending and lifting.

 

The successful applicant will also need to have a current driver's license.

 

Tiling apprentices are trained on the job and on completion gain a Level 4 National Certificate in Floor and Wall Tiling.
