SkillEX and WorldSkills competitions provide trainees and young employees
across many industry sectors, the opportunity to evaluate their skills against their peers within a set time limit and more importantly, test themselves to see how they handle the most essential aspects of their job.
The eight person Otago Southland SkillEX team acquitted themselves well against the best in the New Zealand. The team comprised of Phillip Jopson in Automotive Technology, Nick Elliot in Joinery, Ben Crabbe and Israel Pankhurst in Engineering Fitting, Selwyn McEwan in Welding, Karl Irvine in Bricklaying, Doug Robbie and Hayden Gentle in Carpentry.
Southland also provided judges for a number of the competitions: Charlie Turner in Electrical, George Kempton, John Findlay and Donald Ross in Fitting, Peter Leith and Karen Hogh in Joinery.
